Home of the Missouri State Fair
Sedalia is home to Missouri's State Fair and many other events on its fairgrounds, theScott Joplin Festival, the nearby Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site, the nationallyacclaimed Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, and of course the beautiful 1896Sedalia Katy Depot. The Depot has railroad heritage exhibits and a depot store. Onceyou arrive, pick up a free brochure, take your bike or walk on a self-guided SedaliaHeritage Trail, which begins at the historic Katy Depot. More than 60 historic structuresare on the tour, including the historic Hotel Bothwell, as the trail winds through Sedalia’sDowntown Historic District where Scott Joplin composed and performed and past thefirst Carnegie Library west of the Mississippi River. The 1901 library has marble floors,open fireplaces, white oak woodwork and Carthage stone. The Hayden Liberty CenterAssociation for the Arts is located in a renovated 1920s theater and art gallery. TheIvory Grille and Fitters 5th Street Brew Pub are also located in the Historic DowntownDistrict. Continue on through Liberty Park where the first fairs in Pettis County wereheld. Take your bike if you want to continue on the trail through the State FairgroundsHistoric District and onto the campus of State Fair Community College, where you canvisit the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art.
